A motorcyclist was killed in a fatal crash with a driver who was arrested for operating under the influence.
John Crowley, a 69-year-old Portage resident, died after a crash on West U.S. 12 at County Line Road in Michigan City Thursday.
The crash also involved a sport utility vehicle driven by 71-year-old Michigan City resident Alvin Speakes, who was subsequently arrested on OWI charges.
Michigan City police said multiple 911 calls were received at 7:44 p.m. Thursday regarding the crash. Officers responding to the scene provided life-saving measures to the motorcyclist and first aid to the driver of the sport utility vehicle, police said.
Crowley was rushed to the nearby Franciscan Health Michigan City Hospital but succumbed to his injuries there.
Speakes had minor injuries and was taken to Franciscan Health Michigan City Hospital for medical treatment. After his discharge from the hospital, he was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated-causing death, operating while intoxicated-endangerment and operating while intoxicated.

After reviewing the investigation, LaPorte County Superior Court Judge Jaime Oss found probable cause to charge Speakes with the three charges for which he was arrested. Bond was set at $20,000 in cash.
