Do it yourself, or DIY – isn’t always the easiest thing to do in the world – especially by yourself when you are starting off. Anyway, no matter how skilled we get at household tasks, chores, and maintenance work, it always feels like our fathers, or grandfathers were a bit better. Maybe that’s what they felt like as well? However, no matter your skill level – there are plenty of ways that you can master any DIY task in the home. With the right tools, the right materials and knowledge as well as time, you’ll be well equipped to handle every DIY task.Firstly you need the right equipment. Now, I’m not talking about the tools – that comes after. To perform any task in the home, you’re going to need to keep yourself safe and comfortable. Now, not every task in the home will require a hard hat – but if you’re performing something that could result in a head injury, you do need to protect your head. Working overhead or up a ladder requires you to wear a hard hat by default. Just keep one around, better safe than sorry, eh? Gloves are also good and will save your fingers when working with hammers and other tools. Kneepads are useful when working low and can save your knees. You also need to equip yourself with the right working techniques – bend from the knees and joints, not from the waist and back. Equipping yourself with the right safety gear will ensure your body is comfortable and safe during DIY tasks.

You also need to equip yourself with knowledge. Any DIY task you can imagine will have a list of guides, tutorials and videos that can show you what you need to do and what tools you need to do it. Knowledge is key as it can not only help you perform a DIY task, it can show you how to do it quickly and safely. Mastering the task? It comes from repetition and learning. That’s knowledge picked up through experience.
Of course, you need tools and materials as well. From hammers, to saws and bricks to oak beams for sale, you need to make sure that you purchase and equip the right tools and materials for the job. Every job requires a different tool and you’ll know that from your research. It’s not just about the tools – mastering any DIY task requires that you use your tools and materials right. This comes from experience – the more that you utilise them, the better off your DIY work will be!

As with any task or activity in life, you can only master DIY activities if you actually perform them, you will not master them without trying. Practice makes perfect and if you can find a use for tools and materials, try to use them and if you make a bunch of mistakes, learn from them! Mastering DIY projects will be about repetition and building on your knowledge, so learn and keep learning so that you can master any DIY project or task.

Luckily my husband is great at D.I.Y as he is a self employed painter and decorator, he does lose his temper when attempting flat pack furniture though and the dog disappears upstairs!
